I remember once someone said to me "you’re such a natural!" referring to how I talked to my children. I almost laughed out loud! It’s not natural, at all. In fact, the practices and scripts I used to talk to [and listen to] my children were learned and practiced a thousand times over. Newsflash: I still make mistakes. I still get triggered and say too much, the wrong thing or start lecturing when I should be listening [this seems to be the
default parent mode of communication!] And when I do, the difference is that I know how to get back on track. And I have to adapt all the time because as my children grow, we face new challenges requiring more listening and speaking in a helpful way rather than shutting down conversation. So, no. I’m not a ‘natural’. But over time, I have developed a set of skills and scripts that really work.
